Baking Soda Painting
Ingredients:
1/2 cup baking soda
2–4 tablespoons water
Food coloring or liquid watercolors
Small bowls or muffin tin
Thick paper (cardstock or watercolor paper)
Brushes, spoons, or popsicle sticks
White vinegar
Pipettes, droppers, or small spoons
Tray or baking sheet
Directions:
1. In each small bowl, combine 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda with enough water to achieve a smooth, paint-like consistency. Add a splash of food coloring or liquid watercolor to bring your paint to life.
2. Lay your thick paper on a tray or baking sheet to catch any splashes—it’s a great way to keep your workspace tidy.
3. Using your brushes, spoons, or popsicle sticks, apply the baking soda paint onto the paper to create your unique designs. Get creative and let your imagination flow!
4. Pour some vinegar into small cups. Use pipettes, droppers, or little spoons to drip the vinegar onto your painted artwork. Watch in awe as it fizzes and bubbles due to the reaction!
5. Once the fizzing calms down, let your masterpiece dry flat for several hours or overnight to fully set.
6. For an extra touch of sparkle, sprinkle glitter on your wet paintings before they dry. Feel free to discuss the cool science behind this fun reaction!
Tips & Variations:
1. Experiment with different amounts of water to create various paint consistencies. A thicker mix will provide more texture, while a thinner one may give a more fluid effect.
2. Try using different types of paper such as construction paper or canvas to see how the paint reacts on different surfaces. Each will yield unique results!
